Transgender people have a higher rate of suicide and suicide attempts than the general population. Studies from the US have suggested a suicide rate of about 41%, 10 times the cisgender or global population suicide rate. Other studies, here from Scotland, provided data suggesting a suicide rate of 27%. Regardless of that actual figure, tragic as it is, the rate is multiples of the global population figure. Why? Some commentators suggest that it is due to mental health.
However, none of the studies, despite some media attempts to do so, have identified the link between transgender individuals and mental illness. "They actually all indicate that people who are transgender feel ostracized for their identity; their high suicide rates reflect rejection, discrimination, violence, harassment, and the negative life circumstances that result from such treatment."

- Feb. 15: 46-year-old Kristina Gomez Reinwald (aka Kristina Grant Infiniti) of Miami, Florida (fatally stabbed, no charges filed)
