This supporting case has been written to secure some form of funding to continue the excellent progress seen so far when supporting parents of LGBTQ children across the county of Lincolnshire.
Since January 2015, when the group was founded, the number number of parents joining has continued to increase and currently it stands at 18 parents, predominantly with transgender children – a number of other parents have contacted us but have yet to join. We get people referred to us from other neighbouring LGBT centres and also national groups such as the Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays (FFLAG). Due to our preference to meet with parents and support them personally, rather than via telephone or using social media alone, many parents are now coming to us as they want to journey with someone as they support their own child and family. For us this is the key to this group – that we journey with others in a personal way.
Upon initial contact we do want to speak with them by phone and then to meet up with them, to share life journeys and for them to know that they are not alone. After one meeting one parent succinctly summed up their experiences as follows:
"I think today, as parents, we felt hope. Today we saw that there is acceptance too and the world for our child is not as as scary as we maybe thought”
We wish to continue to provide this resource to the families. In this supporting case we wish to detail our current expenditure and set out our plans for the next financial year (FY).
We received a donation of £150 from the Christian Nightlife Initiative (CNI), who run Street Angels. We provided them with a workshop at their national conference in October 2015; they paid for our transport and the donation was for our contribution. We have also undertaken further conferences where we have spoken and received a refund of our transport and incidentals costs, such as a cold lunch. We have also received a donation of £50 from a house church in Sleaford (@CreateLincs) which funded the conference stall sheets and initial purchase of business cards.
We have a website that has been paid for out of private funds. It will require the subscription for the name of lincsparentslgbt.org.uk to be paid to 1and1.co.uk from December 2016 of 35p a month. The use of the website at lincsparentslgbt.weebly.com is free. The use of the email address of email@example.com is free, as is the use of the Twitter @LGBTLincs.
We have purchased advertising literature from a graphic designer called Lisa Jones (@LisaJonesDesign). They are local and from the LGBTQ community. The cost for 500 colour A5 sheets was approximately £45.
We provide a bi-monthly meeting for all parents within the group. The venue is currently at Uncle Henry's Farm Shop & Café. We are thankful to Just Lincolnshire for financing the provision of cakes and hot drinks at these sessions. Currently the cost is approximately £90 per session. However, we may have to consider charging the individual attendee a nominal sum to reduce outgoings in the next FY.
When parents wish to join the group we do try to meet up with them so that they are really aware that we want the support to be personal rather than behind a social media barrier. Currently Mandy & I pay for our own transport costs.
We wish to continue:
- the use of the website and attending conferences to promote the message that being a parent of an LGBTQ child is normal and acceptable.
- the holding of periodic meetings to bring together the group of parents so that they can collectively share their journey. On many occasions parents have said that they are “relieved that they are not on their own on this journey”. Of concern is that the group is spread far and wide, and Lincolnshire is a very large rural county. We may need to consider a 2 venue meeting to cater for those in the north and south of the county; with considerations in the future for the east when parents come forward from there.
- Community, so that they can be themselves in a safe space.
Hence expected expenditure within FY 2016-17 is as follows:
We seek the sum of £750 to cover our planned expenditure for the forthcoming FY.
